Triple step, Triple step, Rock Step. Lindy Hop, Jitterbug,
Charleston. They’re all variation on this wonderful dance. It’s no
surprise that swing clubs are so popular nationwide. Swing is the
only dance style in which the dance partners actually push off one
another. So a perfect balance of push and pull between them is
essential. Take small steps. Swing music can be fast and you have
to do a lot of quick weight transfers in all those triple steps.
And, you don’t want to push yourselves too far apart. Feel free to
swing your hips. That’s where the name comes from!
Swing comes in two flavors:
East Coast Swing
East Coast Swing is fun, easy. It’s a good dance for beginners.
The music reminds you of an old time juke box. Picture your
parents and grandparents when they were in their roaring 20’s. The
basic step is triple step, triple step, rock step. Remember--small
steps! The lady travels around the gentleman as the planets around
the sun.

West Coast Swing
West Coast Swing is a much slower, expressive, sexy dance that
spotlights the lady. It was developed to slow nightclub music and
is danced backwards and forwards in a line (or “slot”)—because it
was danced between tables. This dance consists of six and eight
count patterns.
